Reflection #4: Research Process

1.  What have you learned about Information Literacy?  How did the library tutorials inform your own research process and understanding? 2.  Describe your own research process?  What steps did you take toward constructing your final research paper? 3.  How did you evaluate the quality of your sources and weigh their worth/merit? 4.  What was difficult about writing a paper like this? 5. What research skills were you particularly strong in, and which will you continue to work on in the future? 6.  How do social interactions:  conferencing, tutoring, and peer reviews, etc. continue to inform your own writing process? The library tutorials informed me on a lot about my own research. It taught me many ways I can find the right information. It also taught me how to find the information I found previously at another time. These were very helpful tutorials and I would really recommend them to anyone who doesn't feel comfortable looking for informa...

Bowling for Columbine

Cut off the middle man. What guns should be legal? Little kids turned into devils. Violent past.  These problems and how to fix mass shootings will never be known. I feel if you make guns illegal people are still going to find them. Drugs are illegal and people still have a way of finding them somehow. It's basically a lose lose situation. There is no winning. It is sad but I think some people go crazy and there is no way for us to know when and where these people are going to go crazy. Mass shootings are a terrible thing and I think Gun Control might not work. If you take away guns more people will want them.

Issue Exploration

Advocacy means taking a stand for an issue and bringing light to this issue. What it means to be an advocate is you are going to do whatever you can to bring light to this topic and try for change. We should be paying attention to topics like "terrorist attacks" or  senate passing laws. Big issues bring a lot of attention to them. There was a terrorist attack in Manhattan yesterday. It is issues like this that we should be trying to stop. We need to have more control on things. But, yet again we cannot really know when something like this is going to happen. 1. Terrorist Attacks 2. Education 3. Sports 4. Health 5. tuition 6. abortion 7. sexual assault 8.

Argument #1- Kilbourne- What is Kilbourne's Argument? What is she advocating for?

I personally really liked Kilbourne's argument. I really think woman have been portrayed as being too fat or being the only ones in the kitchen doing the work around the house. She said "What it meant to be a woman. Kilbourne clearly states that in one of the ads it said, "Feminine odor is everyone's problem." This clearly states that women used to be portrayed as dirty and everyone's problem. Women really were looked down on in these days. Kilbourne says that women have to stay "Impossibly young." She is saying that in order for women to be beautiful in these ads they have to be young. Then, she goes on to say that, "Men are photo shopped bigger." She is saying that in these ads men are always made bigger then what they are. While women are made smaller.

Reflection #2

Going through the writing process is always interesting with me. My writing is very unique. I can write a very well written paper. But, in my paper I make little errors. A lot of little errors. Seeing a tutor is always a helpful process because it helps get the big errors out of the way so that you can really get your main point a cross to the writing. Before you see a tutor, you have to brainstorm. When I brainstorm I like to write down all of my main ideas on one piece of paper. This is very helpful because it helps me see all of my main ideas.    With the writing process I learned many things about myself. First, I saw that I like to repeat my main ideas. With this I had to teach myself to restate points in a way where they are different ideas. Also, I learned that I need to be more concise when stating my points. My main thing I need to work on is rereading my papers and making sure I work on seeing those small mistakes and fixing them.   When I ...
Thesis statement- Quotes- "The problem is that instead of using the Web to learn about the wide world, young people instead mostly use it to gossip about each other and follow pop culture, relentlessly keeping up with the ever-shifting lingua franca of being cool in school. " - The Dumbest Generation Most Americans have everything they could possibly want, and they still don't think it's nearly enough.

Connected, but Alone

Her daughter was sitting there for her first talk. Now, she is texting her saying good luck. Using the chat rooms for better understanding of what they should work on. She says technology is taking us places we don't want to go. She says parent's do not give them attention while they are on their phones. Phones keep us from grief. She says phones set us up from trouble. Being alone is not always a bad thing. We want control of our attention. Also, technology gives us a wide variety of attention. We all love attention and how people perceive us. She is agreeing with the other blogs we have read because she thinks that phones are taking us out of the real world where as, I think they are bringing us closer together.

Ecology Of The Mind

Most Americans have everything they could possibly want, and they still don't think it's nearly enough. Lasn's argument in "Ecology of the Mind' is that we as humans have started being in touch with the real world and really have been involved with the social media world. Lasn's trying to show how American's have become dependent on phones and getting basically everything they could ever want. Eat the instant you're hungry and, as the Buddhist master put it, "You will never find out what your hunger is for." Plenitude feeds the malaise as it fills the stomach. Here in this quote the Author is saying that most people do not know what hunger really is but really most people in America do

Reflection Paper

In high school I always thought I was an excelled writer. Now, in college, I feel like I am very illiterate. I have so many thoughts in my head but when I go to write them down I leave out very small details that make my paper lack examples. I have a vision in my head about what I am talking about but, when I go to write them I lack examples and putting what I see in my head into words.        My writing has been increasing because I have put more detail and effort into my papers. I have been increasing my writing by putting more time and effort into my papers. Attention to detail is a big thing with my papers.

Personal Culture Paper

Katie Wise WIFYS Dr. Shannon Mortimore-Smith September  21, 2017                 Beautiful In the Heart Basically, how did I become Katie? My story is my story and it means the world to me. Your name is special whether you think it is or not .Your name doesn't have to be special to anyone but yourself. I always thought my name was just Katie, with only meaning to myself.  Then I asked my Mom if my name had any relevance to our family. It is amazing what you can find out about yourself if you just ask a question. My name means a lot of things to me. My name makes me feel one of a kind. When I hear my name I think of a summer Sunday morning.    My name to me really just meant how unique I am compared to all of the other Katie's out in this humongous world. I am different. I am someone who will give you a place to stay in a time of need. I am someone who will run that ...

The first quote I decided to respond to is from the CNN article and it says,"But I am more than meets the eye". When I read this quote I vision a book. I vision a book because legend says you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. I agree with this 100%. With this article saying that I feel like it means that there is more to one person that you can see. There was also another quote that went hand-in-hand with the first quote and that is, "My body is also a billboard for my life, and my tattoos tell the story of my identity". This incorporates with the first quote because ones own body is their story and how they express their life. People make assumptions based on the way people express themselves. These judgments are no fair for these people just because they decide to express themselves one way. Piercings are also like these tattoos. Whether people have a lot of tattoos, piercings, or both they still get judged and that is unfair. What they do ...

Writing Streatch for 9/13

"All of us immigrants knew that moving to America would be fraught with challenges, but none of us thought our names would be such an obstacle". - This quote is connecting with any immigrant that comes to a new country and feels as if they are out of place. Also, the significance is that they are pulling in that many people feel as if their name is an inconvenience so they are drawling an emotion grab on the readers. "I wanted to be a kid with a name that didn't draw so much attention, a name that didn't come with a built in inquisition as to when and why I had moved to America and how was it I spoke English without an accent and was I planning on going back and what did I think of America". - I think that this quote has significance in a way that the American people do ask questions when immigrant people do come to America and really just overwhelm the people.

I disagree with what this author has to say. Coming from a town that belongs in the category of   "Red America" the author generalized all the people where I am from. He put us in one category and made it apparent that everyone from "Red America" are hicks. This statement was very   broad and really offensive. I do recognize these places because I am from the town Waynesboro   that the author uses in the article. I obviously belong to the "Red America" because I am from a small rural town, dirt roads and the hillbilly loving people who are apart of this town. I am  not from "Blue America" because the author is most likely from "Blue America" from the way the bias is written in the article. The author like I said makes very broad and generalizing statements. The author uses the words, "... many of them are racist and homophobic, and when you see them at highway rest stops, they're...

I'm From

Image
I'm from a place where you can throw a rock and touch the other end of town, Where fall weather is as pretty as a rainbow and  buildings are as tall as you. I'm from a town where everyone knows each other. I'm from dirt, from some back road only a mile long. Everyone in my town is old-fashioned  and they do not like change. In my town we have a marvelous place we all love to go. We call this place "High Rock." Here you can see the planes flying through the clouds and actually be able to read what the side of the plane says. We go here to talk pretty much about anything. Most times it's the dark chocolate milkshakes we want or the talks about who we think is sitting at sheetz today. I'm from a place where the love is so strong everybody in my town has the same heart. Everyone in my town will take you in like one of their own. Make you a dinner that includes soft mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh chicken dripping in fl...

My name is Katie Wise. My intended major here at Shippensburg University is Early Childhood Education with Special Education. I am very blessed to have my family. In the picture above includes my mother and my older brother Austin. Not pictured is my dad, younger brother, and my three dogs (Izzy, Max, and Zoey). Yes, I do include my dogs as family to me. In my spare time I love to play softball and go on hikes with my boyfriend and one of my dogs. Going off to college I was super excited. Mostly excited because I get to play softball here at Shippensburg University for 4 years. I am super blessed with everything in my life that I have. Some of my writing experiences include, in high school we had to write a research paper to graduate. My topic was about homelessness. Sad topic but a very needed subject to talk about. I thought that I did terrible. But, with a lot of hard work and dedication into this paper and in the end I rec...
